GROUP 43 - Music Video 2008/9

Key Frames

This was our last shot of the video. Because the song was quite soft, we thought a soft ending was much more appropriate.

This is the second to last shot, and we thought this would be necessary, as it provides an explanation to the video's narrative.

This shot is where Laura discovers the bears heads. It shows the bears aren't an imagination, to her, since she has no interaction with her through the whole video.

This shot is one of the transitions from one place to another. We think this shot has good framing.

This was one of the more memorable shots. Previously, Chris P in the back bear suit ran behind a bus, and appeared, as if from nowhere, and started dancing. Whilst we liked it, it is in direct contrast to the songs feel at this point.

This was one of the beginning shots from the video. This got a few laughs at the Arts Picturehouse.

Feedback from the Picturehouse

Our video got quite good feedback from the audience at the Picturehouse. We got some laughs when they first saw the bears, and saw them in places around town. We then got a largish cheer and claps at the end of the video.

WICKED!!!!!

What we missed

Group 44 used more technical stoof, for example the shot of Scott walking forwards and everyone walking backwards. They also related there video more with the lyrics, for example it mentions rain and its raining :O

Group 45
They used a lot of animation stoof, for example there are lots of drawings incorporated in the video. like group 44 they also referred lyrics to the video- stair shot.

Group 46
Used other peoples expressions and reactions for comedy effect.

Good,

Good shots + locations (big tree on Christs Piece)
The part where the door is opened straight to the forest.
Old time effect on the footage!
Lip syncing.
Well paced.

Bad,

Repetitive.
Should have more close ups.
Change of tone of colours.

Explanation of the pictures through out the blog

The highly controversial pictures placed throughout the blog by a certain Mr Parnell are his way of making the blog fun, playing on our childish theme.
"our blog is now more visually interesting.... sweets for the eyes" says Mr Parnell,
"its silly and rubbish" says Mr Dennis
"I am personally sitting on the fence because i do enjoy looking at the pictures.." said Mr Ould
"the pics r fab!!!!!!!" screamed Miss Durrent
"im not even going to look at the blog" was said by a certain Mr Hip-Hop-Potamitis
We found this deeply upsetting, but we can find it deep in our hearts to forgive him for all his wrong doings.. because we are nice like that.

Problems With The Final Editing

When we uploaded the project to Duncan's laptop for the final edit, we discovered that we did it in the wrong settings, and the quality was terrible so we abandoned the idea.

Deadline Details

We are now very close to our final deadline and still have not quite finished the edditing, to solve this problem we are going to take the footage home and try to finish it before the deadline day.

Our target audience

Our target audience are generally older 17 and beyond... Lots of people have heard our song as it was featured in the Macbook Air advert.
The song has a kind of country style to it, this would appeal to an older audience.
The idea of our music video is to make the audience feel like a child again.

Working Overtime

Last night, both Chris' worked from 4:10pm till 5:30pm. This gives us extra editing time, and they managed to get most of the structure of the video done. This means we just need to refine it, but it now resembles something of a rough cut.

Problems We Have Found During Editing.

During editing we have discovered that we did not have all the shots that we wanted to have. To fix this we left two people editing and sent two people went out with the camera and filmed some more in the forests and more close up lip syncing. This will help our music video flow, so that you can properly see the lip syncing.

Final Cut Filter

After looking at the Noah and the Whale video, we decided that making some footage look really old would be more suited to our video style. Because we couldn't do this effectively with what Final Cut Express provides us as standard. Because Duncan has a MacBook with Final Cut installed, we found a plug-in called "CGM Aged Film LE" which allows us to add a tone, a grain, lines, scratches and trapped hairs to make the footage look as aged as possible.

This was an idea we liked from another group. They are in our class, and they didn't use it in their music video. This effect was achieved my lip syncing the mouth at 66% speed, and then speeding the video up to 150%, so his mouth is at normal speed, but everything else is at 1.5 speed.

Whilst simple, the Aged Film make this clip look better, especially if we want it to look like a memory.

This was one of our first ideas, to clone the bears onscreen. Because there was a short time difference when taking the shots, the brightness changed. Annoyingly, there is a small box around one of the bears which I cannot get rid of.

Rough Cut Feedback

Positives

- Good camera angles
- The feeling /mood of the video matches the song well. Sped up shot of bears looks very professional, as does the shot in the mirror
- Bear suits are really effective, house is really fairytale like with the banister etc.
- setting is good
- simplicity works well with the narrative and the song itself
- What you have is good

Areas for Improvement

- Camera is a bit shaky towards the end. Lighting in bedroom makes shot look amateur
- Lighting out of bedroom is rather dark. More lip syncing is needed as its not very clear
- lighting is a bit dark
- get rid of sound from camera
- some camera noise

Prime idea we wish to use.

This is a video from virus syndicate - slowdown it uses techniques we plan to use, for example swapping between 2 locations every other line. Along with slowing down the speeding up footage to create a cool looking effect!

EDITING IDEAS

We intend in making our video look older by applying a grain to the footage, we are also thinking about making parts of the video look almost "home video" style!
Here is the kind of grain we would like to apply to our video.

Problems With Filming

When filming we occurred 2 problems, 1 of which was the weather which meant we were unable to get any kind of shot by the river as the bear outfits would have been damaged.
We were also unable to get permission to film within the bed shop.

NEW FRIENDS WE MADE!!!!!!

During filming we made many new friends, including Japanese tourists who wanted photos with us, people in need of a hug and many many many waves and a guy who sat on a bench with us and wanted a chat!!!!!!!!
It was reallllllllyyyyyyy good fun :D

We got a job offer!!!

Whilst filming on Thursday, we got approached by a random lady. She was the organizer for the Mill Road Winter Fair, and she offered a job for walking around in the bear suits on the day of the fair. However, she had assumed the bear costumes were privately owned by us, rather than us renting them, so we had to turn her down.

Editing Ideas

This video is by Noah and the Whale, for the song, 5 Years Time. We had problems miming the last verse, so instead, by having a video quality like this (can be achieved by lowering frame rate and ading a grain) as a filler.

Its just an idea

Filming

This really should have been done earlier.

On Thursday, we went ahead with filming as planned. We forgot our storyboard though, so we had to improvise. we also finished filming quite a bit before our planned end, because Laura was getting very cold quickly. The middle of Cambridge was also very busy, so we struggled to get good backwards walking shots.

On Friday, Duncan was away, so Chris O, Chris P and Laura went ahead with filming. They did all the indoor shots in Lauras house, and some of the exterior shots. They couldn't film by the reservoir and woods, because it had rained and there was a lot of slippery mud.

Saturday was planned to be for any more shots that we might need from Cambridge city centre. however, Laura had to cancel last minute, so this was put off.

Monday was used as our last shooting day. We started at Parkers Piece, doing some more shots, and potentially some "cloning". We also did most of our lip-syncing shots. We were in a good mood, so these takes were a lot more comical.

We have returned the costumes, so if we need to do any more shots, we will have to pay for them.

Genre and conventions

The genre of our video is going to be fairytale/fantasy. The existing genre of the artist is fantasy. we can see this through the video of New Soul that we previously posted, where the paintings came to life. We are carry on the theme and making the video very fairytale oriented.

The conventions; happy ending. romance. bright colours. mystical creatures. unexpected twists- far fetched story.

In order for our music video to fit with the song we also need to incorporate fairytale locations and props, such as a cute little cottage, and teddy bears!

Performance / Lip syncing

Our performance/Lip syncing will be done by Laura mostly, because as Chris P Chris O and Duncan will be ether camera man or in a bear costume although we will try to feature ourselves in the video and maybe will be singing as well. this will mean that Laura will need to learn the words for the song and practice lip syncing.

The Science of sleep

This is still from the film science of sleep and it shows an idea that we had to use bears playing instruments this is a fantasy type of film and shows what it might look like.

Tactical camera substitute!

Seeing as we have the bear costumes for 4 days we have decided we shall be filming for all 4 of those days.
We can only use the college cameras for a maximum of 2 days, for this reason we will be using Chris O's camera and tripod as there is no limit as to the amount of time we can use them for.
Chris's camera also produces better quality videos and colours as well as a longer battery life.
We also don't have to worry about breaking the news of damaging college equipment to nick as he would be sad :( and that is not very good.

Bear Costumes

Today, I went to Wardrobe on Sedgwick Street. Firstly, it's damn hard to find.

But more importantly, I have booked our bear costumes. I went along to have a look at them. I only had time to try on one of the suits on. I took some pictures.

This is the daddy bear costume. This is £30 to rent. There is also a "baby bear" costume. This is the same height, but the face is more cartoony. So unless they have another daddy bear head, they will be odd. The baby bear is £22 to rent.

Tomorrow I am going back to book them. I shall be doing them for the 2th of October, but this may be changed depending on our timetables.

If they are booked on a Thursday, then they need to go back for the next Monday. All the filming will have to be done very quickly.

DJ Format featuring Jurassic 5: We Know Something

We are looking at this video because they also use animal costumes. In the video, the animals are used to replace the rappers, who weren't present for the video. So in this video, it is all random footage which is fitted to the music.

Bear Costume Problem

We have been looking all over Cambridge for a while now but we have had very little luck. Until now, we have recently called up wardrobe in Cambridge and they have two bear costumes in stock so Duncan is going to find out more information and take a picture for us. if this goes to plan and we can book the costumes then we will have two bear suits between the four of us for £17.50 each which is reasonable.
